The Peace With Justice Team, a “reconciling presence” believes our denomination’s mission–to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world—calls us to break down barriers that separate people and to embody God’s love for all people. Through education, community out-reach, service, and advocacy, we focus on race, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation/gender identity.
Education: Continuing education and classes on race and race relations, Palestine/Israel, immigration, and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) issues.
Community Outreach: Beal Memorial events: Peace-making in a Violent World: A Christian Perspective, and Following Jesus’ Footsteps in the Neighborhood. Support Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, Holland Citizens’ Task Force on police/community relations, and Holland Area PRIDE.
Service: Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) citizenship clinics. Housing and transportation help for JFON immigrant client family.
Advocacy: FUMC to become a Reconciling Congregation, meaning to welcome all people, without exception.
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” – – Micah 6:8
“Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.” — Cory Booker, U.S. Senator, former mayor of Newark, N.J.
